Denzel Washington & Family Balance

by Apryl Chapman Thomas

Denzel Washington says he is too busy living life today than have time to think about how he wants to be remembered when he is gone.

Washington in somewhat of a Hollywood anomaly. He definitely stands out from other actors, and it isn't because of his resume, which includes 37 movies in the past 29 years. No, it is the way he chooses to live his life in the fast-paced world of glamorous Hollywood.

He isn't a fame-seeker; he realizes that he has talented, but he tries to use that for the better by telling the audience about a certain story or event.

He doesn't think in terms of success, but fulfillment. Happily married for 25 years, father to four children (ages 23, 20 and 16-year-old twins), and a member of the Church of God in Christ, Washington is quickly to point out he doesn't need any “dream” roles because he is living one with his family.

Raised by his mother and his minister father, this very down-to-earth actor credits his faith and strong discipline as the reason behind his success. He hopes to pass these virtues along to his children. To an outsider, it might look as if Washington has everything made, but he, like everyone, has his share of struggles, yet refuse to let those times get him down.

Strong mentors also played a significant role in Washington's life. As the spokesperson for the National Boys and Girls Club, he enjoys giving back. He also extends this in his Hollywood life through directing, as he says he likes working with young people and sharing with them his experiences.

When it comes to his parenting style, he jokes that it is ever-evolving, learn-as-you-go process. Almost the same can be said about a successful marriage, yet, his advice also includes agreeing with everything your wife says.

He wouldn't change a thing in his life, well, except maybe his weight, but some might disagree with that. While he is proud of his work and recognition, it pales in comparison to his faith and his family. M
