I am often asked the question- How do I stop myself from getting older?  My first response is that you cannot.  This is not said to be dismal or discouraging.  It simply points out that in the current way we perceive the space time continuum, we can only get older.  A more empowering question maybe- what can I do to identify and modify my risk for what is currently perceived as being part of the aging process?

The first step is to get annual physical exams.  The second step is to be aware of your family history.  Not because it dooms you to repeat their illnesses, but because it allows you to create the right environment for your genetic material. After all, you would not place a tropical tree in a winter wonderland and expect it to thrive. The third step would be to evaluate your current risk factors.   Are you at increased risk for heart disease, stroke and other atherosclerotic type issues?  These risk factors go well beyond your cholesterol levels.

We are finding that it is not only the amount of cholesterol that matters but also the size of the cholesterol particles.  It is now suggested that cardiovascular diseases have a strong inflammatory component.   A high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP), a marker for inflammation may to identify yet another risk factor.  An imbalance in your Omega 3 vs. Omega 6 (essential fatty acid) ratio may predispose one to an increase in cardiovascular risk.  The Inuit Eskimos traditional consumed about 60-70% fats in their diet.  It was noted that there risk for cardiovascular disease was much lower than the western model.  It was noted that when a more western diet was followed by these individuals an increase occurred in cardiovascular disease.  Here it would seem that the change was in the environment and not the genes.

It would seem that aging and the expression of diseases are complex issues that require a multimodal approach.   The above brief discussion is not meant to imply that solution to aging is as simple as one, two and three.  Maybe that old expression says it best- Aging is much more than skin deep.
